Safety Signs

Safety signs are a vital tool for the workplace. They provide clear pictographic illustrations of the hazard, simple text instructions, and an eye-catching visual design that can help employees avoid danger or take precautions to protect themselves. This is particularly important in diverse working environments where employees may not speak the same language or where loud noises can drown out verbal warnings.

General safety signs are designed to identify potential hazards, such as “Stop”, “Yield”, or “Speed Limit”. Construction and work zone signs notify individuals of particular areas where there is ongoing construction and they should take extra care when entering those zones. PPE safety signs remind workers to wear certain types of personal protective equipment, such as helmets, gloves, and hearing protection.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

PPE must be used in accordance with a risk assessment, following the hierarchy of controls.

Training sessions must discuss why PPE is essential, how to put on and take off equipment, its limitations and any hazards it might pose when in use. It is also important that supervisors demonstrate the correct use of the gear to their workers, as they are role models.

Employers are responsible for ensuring that the right PPE is available, free of charge, to their workers. They must also ensure that they know what to do if equipment becomes worn out or damaged. This is why a PPE program coordinator must be appointed. In addition, a company policy must be established regarding the provision and use of PPE.

Motor Vehicles

Motor vehicles are an important part of the workplace, whether it is for transporting materials between sites or carrying people to and from work. However, they can also pose risks if not operated correctly. A vehicle that is not properly maintained can lead to traffic accidents, the destruction of property and injury or death.

A motor vehicle is any type of car, truck or van that is designed to be self-propelled on public roads. It can be powered by an internal combustion engine or electric motor. Examples include cars, trucks, motorcycles and buses.

It is important that all parties involved in the operation of motor vehicles take a systematic approach to manage road safety for work-related driving of HGVs. This includes establishing laws and regulations that make sense for those who will be affected by them (governments/regulators), facilitating good conditions for drivers and providing them with the skills, competence and experience needed to meet these challenges.

Safety Training

The goal of safety training is to equip employees with the knowledge and confidence they need to perform their jobs in a way that minimizes health risks. It’s also important to teach workers how to recognize workplace hazards and risks and understand the importance of reporting incidents, illnesses, injuries, and hazards so that appropriate action can be taken.

In addition to formal classroom-style safety training, other methods can be used for effective worker education. These include on-the-job training, peer training, and onsite demonstrations.
